Drawing

WEEK 1 9/16-9/23

During this week we were asked to find a quote from one of our favorite books and brainstorm some ideas about a bookmark design. I chose a quote from my favorite book called Beloved.

Week 2- 9/29/20

For week two we boiled down our last designs and did an in class critique.

Week 3-

10/7/20

For week 3 we had to star our final draft for the Bookmark contest. After critiques I knew that not a lot of people understood the concept of the drawing until I explained it with the book so I decided to go with another quote from the book "The Color Purple," by Alice Walker. This concept I feel better communicates the symbolism of the book and its meaning. The quote from the book that I am using is "Just cause I love her, don't take away none of her rights."

Week 4

10/14/20

In this week, we were asked to use our refined ideas and create our final design for the friends of the library bookmark contest. This is my final depiction for "The Color Purple."

Week 7- 10/28/20

For this week, we explored realistic drawing and were asked to draw lips from a reference photo. On the left here I have my reference photo and on the right I have the drawing that I did from this photo. I am not really a fan of realistic drawing so I never practice it which is why my drawing is not the best. I think what I could do better is soften the lines on the lips and blend more. These are the five tips I used:

Blending with a q-tip

Not creating an outline

Trying not to make harsh lines

Paying attention to value

Drawing it in layers

Week 8- 11/4/20

This week, we are preparing to start drawing a black and white photograph using white charcoal and black drawing paper. The picture I have chosen is from South African artist Zanelle Muholi. I chose this photo because both of the context of the artists work- expressing blackness, and because of its beautiful composition and its gorgeous contrast. I think though I might choose a different photo because of the intensity of the textures in the picture.

Week 9

11/11/20

I decided to change my image because I felt like the textures and the actual value in the picture from Zanelle Muholi would be hard to capture on black and white paper, especially only using a white pencil. I really enjoy sill life's so I decided to take one that has varying levels of value and brightness.

Week 10

So I decided to change my reference photo again after critique, and I felt like I wanted to draw a piece from Zanele Muholi, I just chose another picture. I think that the contrast and the deep value of the photo is beautiful and I am excited to draw the photo. Something that I want to pay close attention to is making sure that her face is proportionally right and that the skin isn't as bright as it is right now in this first layer.
